Gilbert Paper Company — Babe Ruth 'Messages That Made History' No. 8, 1952

In 1952, the Gilbert Paper Company issued this illustration as No. 8 of its "Messages That Made History" series, by courtesy of the Babe Ruth Foundation, Inc. The artwork pairs a painted baseball player at bat — stadium bunting and flags behind him — with a portrait of Babe Ruth, tying the paper company's brand to the national pastime at the height of baseball's postwar cultural dominance. The series used historical subjects to lend its paper products the aura of permanence and record — paper as the medium on which history is written. The sheet carries the notice "Copyright 1952" and the Gilbert Paper Company imprint.
