The Chase National Bank — Victory Ahead!

During World War II, The Chase National Bank of the City of New York ran this institutional advertisement under the headline "Victory Ahead!" The illustration shows sailors manning a searchlight, warships on the horizon. The copy argues that naval victory "begins in the shipyards — and even before": it cites a shipbuilding company that received a government destroyer order and, "in conjunction with one of its correspondent banks, the Chase quickly advanced" funds — "a large 'revolving credit' to finance their construction." The advertisement is a specimen of wartime institutional banking publicity, in which a commercial bank presented its lending as a contribution to the war effort: "This is only one of thousands of instances where active banking cooperation is helping to speed America's output for Victory."
