Zack Hogg

A signature reading "ZACK HOGG" appears at lower right on the cover of The Etude Music Magazine for August 1929, set in two lines of drawn capitals with a short third line beneath, possibly a date, which is not legible at the magnification available. The illustration is captioned "The Concert in the Field" and shows an ensemble of grasshoppers performing among goldenrod, black-eyed Susans and dry grasses: a violinist at left, a double bass player at centre in wing collar and orange bow tie, a flautist at right, and a small cricket seated below, with a ribbon banner ruled as a musical stave carrying the words "August 1929" and a great pale sun disc filling the sky behind. The handling is tonal and atmospheric — soft blended transitions, a warm gold-and-green key, dissolving edges — closer to poster and story illustration of the period than to the flat graphic manner used on other Etude covers of these same years. Nothing is documented. No illustrator of this name appears in the standard reference literature on American commercial illustration, no interior credit for the cover art has been identified, and nationality, dates, training and the extent of the body of work are all unrecorded. The Record Institute records this signature without asserting an identity.
